Check Out Some FAQs About Radon Testing and Mitigation

Radon is a subject that most people do not know about. One of the biggest things that Radon Guy would like to do is take the mystery about radon out and inform you as to what the dangers are and how to solve high radon levels to protect you and your family.

We have tried to narrow down the key questions and answers that people need to know about radon testing and mitigation.

Please call for more questions and concerns. Our professionals will provide you with the most current information that you need to know about radon in the home.

Is radon really a health concern?

Although there is some uncertainty as to the exact number of deaths due to radon, all scientists and all major health organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control, the American Lung Association, and the American Medical Association agree that radon causes thousands of deaths every year.

People with respiratory ailments and smokers, including former smokers, are at even greater risk than the general population. Radon exposure has been linked to asthma, allergies, stomach cancer, liver cancer and other illnesses. The very young and seniors may also have increased risk.

How does radon enter the home?

We all know that radon enters a home from the soil around the foundation, but radon can also enter your home from outdoor air, through water faucets and showers, and also from building products.

With the increased use of granite countertops, there is some concern as to how much radon might “outgas” from this popular building material. The fact is that other granite-like building materials can contain trace amounts of radon gas but the amount of radon emitted into the air is generally insignificant.

Are radon tests reliable?

Radon test kits are reliable when 2 test kits are used and placed 4" apart, at least 22" above the floor, at least 2' from any outside wall, and at least 3 feet from any door or window, and can be completed in as little as 48 hours depending on the particular test kit used.

If a home has a radon correction mitigation system installed, do you need to do annual radon tests?

Every home needs a radon test every year. Geology is dynamic, constantly changing, so radon levels can change. Annual radon testing is the only way to be sure indoor radon levels are acceptable. You should also consider installing a radon detector - in your home.

A radon detector displays the current radon concentration in your home just like your thermostat displays the current temperature. Every home should have a smoke alarm, a carbon monoxide detector, and a digital radon detector.

A neighbor’s test result is a good indication of whether a home has a radon problem?

It is not. Radon levels vary from home to home. Dangerous levels have been found in homes in every city, town, and village in this country and other countries where radon is tested. The only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to have the home tested.

I have lived in my home for so long it doesn’t make sense to test now?

You will reduce your risk of lung cancer and possibly stomach cancer, liver cancer, asthma, allergies, and other illnesses when you reduce radon levels, even if you have lived with a radon problem for a long time. Since children, babies, and the elderly are at greater risk, you definitely should test now and buy a digital radon detector so you know you're safe from now on.

Is it difficult to sell a home when radon problems have been detected?

When radon problems are corrected, home sales are not likely to be adversely corrected. In fact, the added protection of an installed radon correction system may actually be a selling point since buyers will never have to worry about the expense of installing a system themselves.

Is it a good idea to get a radon detector installed in your home, day care, or business?

It is very wise to have annual radon tests conducted. Just because you have not had any problems in the past does not mean that radon might not have found a path to your home or business. Radon detectors are a good idea for any property because you will know when the levels rise and what to do if the levels stay at an elevated state.

Radon testing should be performed annually. Call Radon Guy at 406-580-7485 for radon testing and services to lessen your exposure to radon.
